To help students approach their finances with prudence and confidence, Ray Walshe, regional vice president of Starr Insurance, spoke about financial responsibility on a recent visit to Thomas Aquinas College’s ӰԺ campus.

Mr. Walshe, father of two TAC alumni, (’94), gave generously of his time and expertise in a two-hour personal finance workshop. The workshop, “A Financial Primer for the Soon-to-Be College Graduate,” was a crash course in money management, equipping students to avoid unnecessary debt and make thoughtful investing choices.

Aided by over two decades of experience in investing and insurance, Mr. Walshe covered topics such as student loans, credit cards, cars, housing, retirement, and investing, addressing questions as they arose. His talk encouraged students to form wise financial habits so they can avoid living paycheck to paycheck after graduation and live a more intentional and generous life. “I want to give you some things to think about when it comes to finance and all of the financial decisions that you are going to start making for yourself,” he said.

“I found the talk a great eye-opener to the number of aspects I must pay attention to in order to become financially independent,” said Leo Vella (’27). “I came away with a rough idea of what effective investing looks like, which simultaneously revealed how much I’m still ignorant of these things. But at least now I have an idea of where I can start to learn more!”
